When they're casual waiting for school to start...do they have things to do? Please tell me he won't be home bugging me all day!?
My DH is an ABM student, and when he was on casual, he didn't have to work like at all. They told him "check your email and go home." But I know some people get jobs where they work a full duty day, so it just depends. I hope your DH gets a real job - I was going nuts waiting for him to start class!!

I was very stressed about moving with the military! Not to mention that my husband isn't the best at remembering to relay important information to me in a timely manner! But, since I had power of attorney, I actually went to TMO and set up the move and went to a briefing about the move. It took about 45 minutes, it was one-on-one and I could ask any questions that I had! My husband just scanned his orders and emailed them to me and I printed them out and took those with my POA! Another place that you can contact is the Family Support Center at the Base that you will be moving to. They will be more than happy to answer any questions that you have. I also found out that once you have orders, someone from the base that you are moving to will be assigned to help you transition to that base! Just make sure that your husband puts down your number and not his. Also with me doing the TMO stuff, it got my husband out of a 3 hour briefing that they did at OCS one afternoon! :D

Thank you so much for that information. So we'll definitely have something for at least 10 days after he shows up. Any ideas on the likelyhood that he will have some "casual" time before starting nav school - and how long that might be? When they're casual waiting for school to start...do they have things to do? Please tell me he won't be home bugging me all day!?
We're not navs so I have no idea... but I think it's fairly normal for them to have some casual time. If he is on casual, he will be given stuff to do, but it may not necessarily take up the whole day from what I've heard from other girls  so be prepared to be bugged potentially!!

when we first PSCed, my DH some how fanagled all this time off and was home for like a month straight without having to report AT ALL. he was fairly good at getting out of the house and getting in to his own trouble without bugging me too much. but, just getting up to work while he slept in everyday was annoying enough to me :) i was very excited and thankful when he was back at work full time!

Since you're non-prior, your DH will get his post-OTS orders around week 8 or 9. At that point, he'll be briefed on how to set up TMO (accronym for the moving peoples!) and he should be able to schedule all of that and will be given all of your options for the move.

Also, if you do not have a place to live set up right away, don't worr, when he in-processes at his new base he can stay in temporary housing called TLF (you'll need to reserve that though right when you get your orders to ensure space). You are guaranteed 10 days when you arrive at your new base when you make reservations, but you can tentatively book and stay up to 30 days as space permits. Your DH should also be given permissive leave once he arrives at his new base for house hunting time.

I know there is a lot to think about in a short time frame, but it will all go much more seemless than it appears!! Also, you can call ahead to the TLF at your new base to find out about internet options. At the very least, they will have dial up, so you could possibly go with him and just work from there (that's what I did, we were in TLF about a week when we moved and I just worked from dial-up... I telecommute from home as well).

Good luck!

Others have more experience with this than me, but I can tell you directly that you won't find out "officially" what your orders are until about week 8 of OTS. Although, if navs only go one place, you pretty much know, unless your husband's class is one that goes directly to ASBC, which is six weeks more at Maxwell, but much more casual and for which you and your daughter could join him if you wanted. Housing is provided.

I was surprised at how quickly my DF and I were able to find housing in Las Vegas, where he went after tech school. You might be able to find something in those few days, especially as you can start looking online as soon as you know.

Your husband (or the three of you, if you're all there) do get lodging in "temporary family housing" during the move. There's a certain amount of time you're allotted to get housing. My experience with TLF is that it's like a small apartment, but with a furnished kitchen at least! Meanwhile, your stuff can be moved by TMO (the military moving people) and in storage to be delivered to your living quarters once you get those figured out.

I hope this helps somewhat--moving is always confusing!

Welcome to the board!

Take care,

Sarah :^)[/list]

1st move after OTS

Post by navwife » Mon Mar 12, 2007 10:13 am

Greetings All -

Forgive me if this is repetative information, but I have not been able to find the thouough answer to my question. DH was nav select in the 0605 boards and his FC1 has been signed off on. He is a non-prior and we are praying for a class date of 0707. My question is, how will our first move go after he has completed OTS? I know that he will have 5 - 10 days to report to nav school, and we (my 3 year old daughter and I) do not plan on joining him until we have a house or apartment set up - because I will be working from home and need to make the transition into my home office without too much of a break from work.

Basically, I want to know where we will be able to learn all the info we need for making that move? Will he be given all the information at OTS? If we are not joining him immediately, could he live in barracks while he is looking for a house or apt - and if so how would that effect our BHA? Also, is there someone on base (we're not too far away from Hanscom) that we could maybe go and meet with that could help us answer these questions, or do we just have to have no info for our future until it is upon us?

To date, I have not at all worried about how things are going to happen, but we're offically homeless (living with his parents) as of 6/15/07 and will want to move quickly as soon as he's out of OTS.

Sorry this is so long, I'm just beginning to kind of freak out about this 1st big move when we're still totally clueless on how the AF works.
